The Most Popular Niches In Affiliate Marketing

One of the things I get asked a lot is what niche should I work in.  I have addressed that topic in How To Find Your Niche.  However, many of you still ask things like what are the most popular niches or what niches do other affiliate marketers work in.  The truth is that there are

Niche Marketing

Pick One Of These Niches And You Can’t Go Wrong

literally hundreds and maybe thousands of niches that people work in and make a good living online.

But let me try and answer the question by using the old 80/20 rule.  There are a few niches that probably get promoted by 80% or more of all affiliate marketers.

Those niches are:

  • Relationships
  • Health & Fitness
  • Financial/Investing
  • Internet Marketing
  • Disaster Preparedness
  • Gaming
  • Music

Of course there are others as well like foreign languages that people do very well with but if I had to narrow it down to 6 or 7 macro niches this is where I would start.

The reason is that all of these niches have a large audience of people looking for information and solutions to their problems.  Remember we are in the problem solving business.

Of course each niche has its own sub-niches which provide more opportunities than you can ever cover as an individual.

Relationships

This niche really got its momentum on products that focused on “how to get your ex back”.  Now it has grown tremendously to cover things like how to get a man, how to get a woman, how to get engaged, how to save a marriage, how to pick up girls, what to men really want etc. etc.  The list goes on and on.  The point is that as long as there are people there will be relationship issues and if you work this niche your job is to help people find a solution for their relationship issues.

Health & Fitness

This is a HUUUUUUUUGE niche.  It really is impossible to talk about here everything that could be included in this niche.  But here is the major breakdown.  The first thing everyone thinks of

Health & Fitness

Health & Fitness Has Huge Opportunity

in this category is how to lose weight.  So there are thousands of guides, diet pills, supplements etc. on how to lose weight.

In addition, you see a tremendous number of products aimed at getting in shape which is somewhat different than just losing weight.  This is about getting ripped, toned, adding muscle or bulk.  There are some products that blur the lines and combine fat loss with getting in shape.

Health and Fitness also covers things like how to get rid of acne or eczema and other skin conditions.  Anything that might embarrass you in terms of your appearance has a group of people looking for a solution.

Health and Fitness is now even growing into areas like how to treat hypothyroidism or kidney disease.  There are usually natural and/or holistic approaches that include some dietary information to help people with ailments that even their doctors have not been able to cure.

Financial/Investing

Financial/Investing products can sound a little intimidating at first. But once you get into them and understand the vocabulary.  For the affiliate marketer these products typically revolve around three subcategories:

  • Foreigh currency exchange
  • Options Trading
  • Penny Stocks

These customers tend to be a little more challenging to convert because they are after all thinking a little like investors from the beginning.  But the price tags and commissions on these products can be very high so once you do convert them it is well worth your efforts.

Internet Marketing

Ok, if you’ve read this far you probably know quite a bit already about this niche.  Every year there are new products launched to tell you how to make money online.  They tend to fall into a few large categories including:

  • General How To Make Money Online Courses
  • Traffic Generation
  • SEO/SEM
  • Facebook Marketing
  • You Tube (2013’s was a big year for YouTube Marketing courses)
  • CPA Offers
  • List Building

Of course within each of these categories there are hundreds of products offered.  This is where a lot of people run into problems because they keep reading or watching the next course that comes along without taking real action on any of them.  You have to do the work to get the benefits from any of these programs. Some are great, some are good, some are well….not so good.

Disaster Preparedness

This is a relatively new and emerging niche. At one time, people thought it was for “crazies” who were into the end of the world date.  However, with the rise of global warming and superstorms like Katrina hitting us more regularly people have realized there is a real need for these products and concepts.  The audience for this is growing.

Gaming

Every year there are new hit video games.  Invariably, someone published the “how to” guide for that game. These can be very lucrative if you get in at the start.  But timing is important here as once the game is out for a year the interest in the guides for that game declines.  The big exception is World Of Warcraft which is the biggest gaming audience around a single game in the world.  These guides sell year after year but of course new chapters are added as the game evolves.

Music

Many people don’t think of music but it really is a natural for online affiliate marketing.  There

Music Niche

Music Is A Popular And Lucrative Nice

are hundreds of how to courses for just about any instrument you can think of.  Of course the most popular ones are guitar and piano.  More recently selling beats, beat makers and music producers has become very lucrative.  The best products let complete newbies sound like professional DJ’s.

Let me know if you think there is a major niche I missed.  This should give you a pretty good guide to getting started if you were stuck thinking about what area to promote.

One final word of caution. Try and work one niche until you have some success with it.  Then if you want to switch or add other niches you can apply what you’ve learned marketing yourtim first niche.  Most people struggle when they just “dabble” in one niche and write a few articles, then jump to another niche and write a few articles about that.  You really do need to work your niche to see results.

How To Find Your Niche

One of the first things you have to determine when you are trying to make money online is what niche you want to work in. This really is a big decision and deserves a lot of thought and consideration.  Starting an online business is no different than starting any other type of business. You need to decide what your business is going to be about. You need to know how

Find Your Niche

When You Find Your Niche You Will Know It

to find your niche.

There are three main ways that most people get their start marketing online.  You can find your niche by:

  1. You start with a hobby or personal interest
  2. You start with something you think  can make you a lot of money
  3. You start with some product or idea that you got in an e-mail or as part of some internet marketing course you took

Each one of these approaches to finding your niche has its own positives and negatives.

You can find your niche by starting with a hobby or personal interest. It is a good way to start because you probably know a lot about the subject matter and it is easy for you to write about.  You have more natural passion for the subject matter so you can easily get excited and stay interested. The only real downside to this is that your niche may be limited or small.  This can greatly limit how much you can make online.  It really all depends on what your niche is but sometimes your “hobby” business can be limiting.

In real estate their is a saying “fall in love with the deal, not the house”.  This is referring to the fact that most of us can’t help but look at a house as someplace the we might want to live in. However, the real way to look at a house in terms of as an investment has more to do with how much you can get it for and what it is worth. So you should focus on the “deal” or business part of the house, not how attractive it is to you to live in.

You can find your niche the same way in online marketing. the way.  For example, some people hear that there is a lot of money to be made in the “dieting” niche so they go after that. The good thing here is that if you have done your homework the niche is lucrative and you can make a lot of money. However, you might not know anything about the dieting niche. So you have a ton of research and catching up to do.  Also, niches that are known to be lucrative are also very competitive.  So its a double edged sword.  Lots of money to be made, lots of people trying to make it.

Another group of online marketers start chasing after every product or niche that some guru tells them to pursue. This starts out innocently enough.  You take someone’s course on Article, Facebook or YouTube Marketing. In that course they show how they used their techniques to make money in a certain niche that they are in.  The next thing you know you are trying to do the same thing.  Then you take another course and bam, you’re chasing another niche.  This is an endless cycle.  If you get lucky, you may find a niche that works for you.  If you do stick with it and don’t get too distracted but the next hot niche that comes along.  I don’t recommend this approach to find your niche but I know it happens a lot and I understand why it happens.  Try to find your niche by thinking about what you really want to do, not what someone else is telling you to do.  What are you passionate about?

In summary, we would recommend that beginners get started with something that you have an interest in. Start with your hobby niche.  Some people will tell you that you have to move on from your hobby niche to make any real money online but they maybe wrong.  That is what happened to me with the golf niche. I got started with it and then hit a plateau.  A lot of guru’s said I had to give that up and get into a more lucrative niche to make any real money online.  It turns out they were wrong.  It took a while but I found a way to grow that business.

It is easier to learn how to make money online by starting with a category or niche that you are familiar with.  You can learn what techniques and approaches work with you.  Once you have an approach you can apply this to other niches and grow your online business but it is easier to start this way.

Then you can fall in love with the deals like the real estate people.  The truth is if you start to make money with a niche it is amazing how quickly you can get into it and learn about it.  Profit is a great motivator.  So once you’ve figured out how to make things work with your hobby niche you can apply that to more competitive and lucrative niches.

Finally I don’t ever recommend method three which is just chasing after what some other guru or online marketer told you.  Most likely they want you to get into whatever they are promoting.  Start with what you know and move onto the things that you have determined to make the most business sense for you.  Do your own analysis and stick to it.
