Here are a couple of things you should know about me.
My entire career has been in advertising and marketing. I have been lucky enough to work for one of the largest advertising agencies in the world when they had accounts like Jeep, Hilton Hotels and Taco Bell. While working there I was in charge of all the advertising for a major golf brand, which made this my dream job.
I grew up an avid golfer and now I was on the inside of the golf industry. I got to meet and even play some golf with major championship winners. I also got to play golf at some really nice golf courses including August National and trust me not many people can say they’ve actually played golf there.
I’m telling you all this to let you know that I was trained in the basic marketing principles of Price, Product, Place and Promotion or the 4 P’s as they are affectionately called in business school.
I guess I always had the entrepreneurial bug and eventually I started my own advertising agency. And you can probably guess that yes I managed to get another major golf equipment client. I also got work with some of the major golf shaft and golf grip suppliers.
So of course over time my online business efforts found their way to the golf industry. And today I still do make most of my online income from the golf industry but it’s not where I started online, not even close.
My First Affiliate Sales
I still remember my first affiliate sales like it was yesterday. I had somehow gotten a hold of a guide on Article Marketing. This guide encouraged you to sign up for an account at a digital information portal called Clickbank. They sell thousands of information products there. Then you were to find a product and buy a domain name based on the product you found that you wanted to promote.
So I found a relationship product that was designed to help someone get back together with a lost boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife. Then I simply set up a redirect using my affiliate code to this product. (If this doesnít make sense, stick around my blog and you will find content that gets into more detail on Affiliate Marketing techniques.)
So now I had my own link set up to a product. What I had to do now was write an article about the subject and submit to an article directory like Ezine Articles.
So I did that. It was probably 2am at this point because I always had to work on this stuff late at night after work.
As I logged out of the article submission I was back at my home page on my web browser which for me was Yahoo.com. And there on the home page of Yahoo was a big picture of a very well known relationship guru we have all seen on TV. She had written an article about the rising divorce rate and something about the 7 or 8 major reasons that cause couples to break up.
Well part of the training I read said that you should look for opportunities to post your affiliate link. I had a Yahoo email account so I posted a comment on this article about how sad it was that more and more people were getting divorced but it was great that there were some good resources for getting couples back together and posted my new domain name that linked to this relationship product.
So that was it, it was late and I went to bed. I woke up the next morning and got ready for work. But before I left for work I logged into my ClickBank account and WOW I had made 6 sales for about $144! Needless to say I was hooked on affiliate marketing. This seemed really easy.
What I didnít know was that I had gotten incredibly lucky and was actually guilty of spamming. I didn’t even know what spamming was then but I had just done a pretty good job of it.
So please do not use this as any kind of example of what you should do because its not. It’s a bad idea for several reasons.
First, it is spamming and I did lose my email account as a result. I was so naive it took me a week to figure out what happened. I actually wrote Yahoo and they finally told me why they banned my account. I was embarrassed.
Second. This is not a way to build a real sustainable business. It is not repeatable and you cannot scale that approach to increase your income in any meaningful way.
However, there are some lessons to be learned from my first affiliate sales. It took me a long time to figure them out despite my classic training in marketing. So I will save you some time in your own efforts.
All you need to do is find a product that a certain audience really needs and put it in front of them at the right time and you will make sales. I had put a relationship product in front of a large group of people reading about the problems with relationships. This was a very good target for the product I put in front of them.
So if you get nothing else from this page just remember this:
Send Targeted Traffic To A Quality Product. Repeat.
That is just how easy it is to be an affiliate marketer.
What I Love About Affiliate Marketing
People ask me why I like affiliate marketing so much. My answer is simple. It is one of the easiest and most stress-free ways I have ever encountered to make money. You have no responsibility for product development or service. You simply have to promote good products to an interested audience and you will make sales. You don’t have to worry about things like product development, sales pages, getting affiliates to promote your product, returns, service etc. With affiliate marketing you are strictly in the marketing side of things without the headaches of product ownership.
So thatís my story and Iím sticking with it. Hopefully it gives you a good idea of where I’m coming from and why I’m excited about Affiliate Marketing.
